How we test fishing gear

A published protocol so you can judge our verdicts — measurements, time on the water and what we refuse to do.

Reels

Spooled with 10 lb braid. Drag pulled 25× per setting on a digital load cell; we report max drag and variance. Line lay photographed after 200 casts. Sealing tested with a 30-minute spray cycle.

Line

Diameter measured at 10 points with a micrometer; knot strength with 10 pulls of Palomar and FG knots; abrasion on a rotating stone.

Rods

Deflection photographed under 1, 2 and 4 lb loads to show true power and action.

Scores

Weighted: performance 50%, durability 20%, value 20%, ease of use 10%.
