How this tool works
Flow (cubic feet per second), gage height and water temperature come from USGS gauges through the Water Data OGC API, polled every 15 minutes. USGS marks recent values provisional until reviewed. Rising water after rain usually muddies a river; judge wading safety on site, never from a number.
FAQ
What river flow is good for fishing?
It depends on the river: a flow that is perfect on one stream floods another. Compare today's reading with the river's recent trend and its usual level for the season.
What is gage height?
The height of the water surface at the gauge, in feet above a local reference point. It is not the water depth; compare it with the same gauge's earlier readings.
Why is a reading marked provisional?
USGS publishes real-time values before they are reviewed. Ice, debris or equipment problems can make a provisional value wrong, and USGS revises it later.
